The fact we make a promise to someone is not as important as keeping it. 3437

Learn it.
A promise is similar to an oath. A promise is made with the intention to keep it, but sometimes falls short. An oath is given, implying you will do whatever is necessary to deliver. Failing an oath, however, will usually carry certain consequences, as it places your honor on the line. To a believer there shouldn't be any difference between the two.

Live it.
The other day I heard a news report on radio talking about being safe at a gas station. It seems the new crime is someone sneaking up and stealing something from your car through an open door, all while you're pumping gas. It was advised to lock the car doors while pumping gas and to do it before paying for it. I thought they must not live in Memphis. I don't know any station that's not, "Pay first, then pump." It seems it's as hard for a business owner to trust a consumer as it is for a consumer to trust a business.

Have you heard the saying, "A man's word is his bond?" They say a handshake used to be enough to make a contract. I feel vulnerable talking about this because I've yet to keep my word on many financial promises I've made in my life, but I want to. Paying a debt can sometimes take a lot of time, even with good intentions, because we usually depend on things over which we have no control. Still, isn't the mark of a Christian to keep his word regardless if anyone else keeps theirs?

Pray it.
Help me, LORD, for what's in my hand depends on You, but what I do with them depends on my integrity and memory.
